About the Project

The Problem

Millions of websites continue to utilize Version 3 of Joomla! well over a year past the end of public official support. In February 2025, commercial Joomla! 3 websites that have been paying for eLTS update services will also lose support.

Version 3 represents 83.8 percent of Joomla! installs. (2.6 million websites)

Joomla! powers 1.6% of all websites. Among reported Joomla! websites, version 3 remains the dominant active version by a significant amount at 83.8 percent. With approximately 200 million active websites, that represents over 2.6 million still using Joomla! 3.

This many insecure websites represents a significant potential security risk for the entire internet. Without action, the problem will continue to grow worse.

Our Solution

We plan to provide a subscription-based live update service delivering security and maintenance patches for professional customers to replace the ending Joomla! eLTS program. This support will allow professionals and businesses who are currently using the Joomla! eLTS program to maintain continuity and will help the wider installed base become more secure.

The project aims to deliver two main components:

  • Subscription Live Update Service: Supporters who contribute $125 will receive a one-year subscription to the LJP live update service. The target start of service will be March 1, 2025 to provide coverage after the official Joomla! 3 elts program ends in February, 2025.
  • Public Update Repository: The Legacy Joomla Project is making a repository available providing critical security patches and occasional maintenance updates to the general public. This service is currently active. It will be maintained on some level through 2025 regardless project funding, but funding will obviously increase ability to provide support.
